About The Sanctuary

The Sanctuary epitomizes the Aspen idea of nurturing the mind, body and spirit - and it’s this holistic approach that makes the estate truly special. Nestled high in an Aspen Grove with a year round river crisscrossing through, and under this special home, the White River National Forrest surrounds you on three sides. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and “Sanctuary” with us and our family during the aspen glow season. What beauty to wake up to every morning - a feast for all the senses!

— Dr. Roger & JoLene Thomas

In the early days of the Roaring Fork valley, in the time before Aspen became the world class destination that it is today, John McLaughlin was hired by the town's fathers as the original hydro engineer for the Roaring Fork Valley. John was allowed his pick of sites to build his own home, and he picked The Sanctuary's site. Set back on a quarter mile driveway, with a year round fast moving glacier stream / river running through the property, John created a high alpine environment unlike anything else in the Roaring Fork valley. When you stay with us, you'll see why our guests tell us that the water is as much a part of the experience as the tree's and animals that we share the land with. The main house offers an expansive ranch style floor plan with four bedrooms, four and one half baths, formal dining and living room as well as casual family room. The inviting traditional kitchen offers views of the glade and the right fork of the river that cuts directly underneath this special estate. Full laundry facilities, Hot tub and Internet are also available. You'll wake each morning to the sound of running water, and forever views of Aspen Mountain. The guest apartment is a two bedroom one bath unit, with full kitchen and laundry facilities located over the three car garage. With views of its own, the guest apartment is perfect for a nanny or an at home office away from the family.

From the estate's oversized Great Room, visitors can take in spectacular views in all directions: the Roaring Fork Valley to the north, Independence Pass in the south and, to the east and west, White River National Forest and the gondola of Aspen Mountain. All of this, with the famous North Star Preserve just a stone's throw away.

The art is exquisite, elegant and in good taste; Warm and inviting; Cozy. The flowers...the streams...the calming sounds of the streams, the Aspen Groves whispering...the views from the house are unbelievable!! There is natural beauty that surrounds the Sanctuary. There is natural beauty from every room. Photos do not do this justice. The home is large enough for everyone to create their own space. Close to town but it seems a world apart. Close to North Star preserve for easy walks.
